Cotton or Wool? Choosing for the Weather You Live In
Mia Melon on Apr 17th 2024
There are days for a familiar cotton shirt and days when you want the weight of wool around your shoulders. Choosing outerwear asks another question: how will that fabric work in a finished coat?
Cotton and wool each bring something worth wearing. Your weather, the construction of the garment, and the way you like to dress help decide which belongs by the door.
Cotton for texture and everyday ease
In outerwear, cotton can take the form of smooth twill or a more textured herringbone. The weave, weight, and finish all affect how the jacket feels and holds its shape.
A cotton label alone does not mean rain protection. Our Stella combines cotton herringbone with a waterproof membrane, taped seams, and a microfleece lining. Clara offers waterproof cotton twill in a different everyday silhouette.

Choose the shape and feel you enjoy, then check the protective construction described for that jacket.
Wool for a different winter presence
A wool-blend coat can bring texture, drape, and a sense of substance to a winter outfit. Its warmth depends on more than fiber content: fabric weight, lining, insulation, fit, and the layers beneath all contribute.
Lexi has a removable belt and detachable hood, with waterproof and windproof technology in her performance wool-blend construction. Dana adds Sorona insulation beneath a wool-blend outer and a seafarer-inspired toggle front.

For wet days, read our guide to wool and rain. The finished coat's construction matters more than assumptions about the fiber.
Compare the whole garment
Ask these questions as you choose:
- Warmth: does the coat have a light lining or additional insulation, and how much time will you spend outdoors?
- Weather: what protection does this particular style describe, including the shell, seams, hood, and closures?
- Fit: will it move comfortably over the layers you normally wear?
- Feel: do you like the texture, the weight, and the fabric next to your hands and face?
- Care: can you follow the directions for the finished piece?
They can work together, too
A comfortable knit under a waterproof cotton jacket may suit a cool rainy day. A wool-blend winter coat may be the piece you want for longer waits in the cold. Try the combination you intend to wear, with enough ease to move.
