How to Dress for Cold Rain and Still Feel Like Yourself
Mia Melon on Jan 1st 2024
Cold rain has a way of arriving in the middle of a perfectly good day. On the walk to lunch. Between the station and the office. Just as you decide to stay out a little longer.
Dress for the weather and for the plans you want to keep. A comfortable coat, useful layers, and a few considered details can make the walk a much better part of the day.
Choose the coat you want to wear
Start with a shape that belongs in your wardrobe. An A-line jacket, a defined waist, a softer wool-blend coat: each can give an outfit a different feeling.
Then check the weather construction. For rain, look for the protection described for the whole garment, including seams and closures. For wind, think about the collar, hood, cuffs, and coverage as well as the fabric.
Stella combines cotton herringbone, a microfleece lining, and an A-line cut with a high funnel neck and detachable hood. Everglades offers an optional belt and a button-neck collar for another way to wear the day.

Add warmth you can adjust
Begin with a comfortable top, then add a sweater or light middle layer if you need it. You should be able to close the coat and reach forward without pulling across your back.
Consider where you will spend your time. A brisk walk, a long wait outside, and an afternoon moving between heated rooms call for different amounts of warmth. Layers you can remove give you more choice as the day changes.
For colder wet weather, Stella Insulated adds Sorona insulation and a quilted lining. Choose her for the extra warmth you need, rather than adding so many layers that your usual jacket feels crowded.
Think all the way to the pavement
A rain-ready coat is one part of the outfit. Choose footwear suited to the wet ground and enough grip for the surfaces you expect to walk on. Check where your trouser hems fall; keeping them clear of puddles makes the journey more comfortable.
Take a bag that can protect what you need to carry. Try the hood before leaving, and add gloves or a scarf if you want warmth at your hands or neck.
Let color and texture do something for you
Wet streets can make a familiar color look richer. A textured coat over denim, a soft knit beneath a turned-up collar, or a shade you enjoy near your face can make practical dressing feel personal.
You do not need a new outfit every time the weather turns. Start with the pieces you know and give them a coat you are pleased to put on.
